Residents of a care home in Essex who thought their knitting club faced closure through a lack of wool supplies, have been inundated with yarn donations after their story hit the local press.
Thanks to an appeal by the Gazette, a local Brentwood newspaper, the ladies of Winifred Dell House have been overwhelmed with wool from the community – allowing their knitting club to continue.
Activities coordinator Sue Edwards said: "We would like to say a big thank you to the people of Brentwood.
“It means everything to us. Wool is so expensive and the donations mean we can continue to run the club.”
Since the appeal in April, the care home has not been short of wool and regularly receives black bin bags full of yarn.
Residents say the donations have warmed their hearts and have allowed them to get on with the activity they love best – knitting.
And last week, their work went on display and on sale to the public; a collection of colourful hats, jumpers and headbands that managed to raise over £350 for the home.
Resident Winnie Fazzani, 91, who learnt to knit from her mother, said: “There's plenty of wool. I love going to the club.”
