BUSINESS: Retailers Offered Free Web Marketing Courses

The South-West branch of Business Link is hosting a course for budding internet entrepreneurs. Whether you're a PC novice, a keen surfer or somewhere in between, the half-day seminar is aimed at businesses or organisations keen to create or improve their web presence.

A well-designed website is invaluable to most craft retailers. “Online activity is very important to us,” says Sue Rhodes, owner of Bead Exclusive in Torquay, Devon. “We have a website and we sell worldwide, so it gives us the opportunity to trade 24/7 with people around the world. It is the way business is going. It is easy even for small businesses to set up a website, usually with low overheads.”

Entitled 'Web Marketing or how the web influences marketing plans and strategies,' the Business Link course will cover, amongst other things, the importance of web marketing, setting objectives, researching your web market, creating eye-catching design and monitoring your performance. It aims to help you to identify what is important for your business when you use the web, to ensure you get value for money.

Delivered by ICT Insite and QR ventures, supported by Business Link, the half day course is available to businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon and Somerset. Four dates are currently confirmed: 19th February in Barnstaple, North Devon, 21st February in Plymouth, 6th March in Taunton, Somerset and 12th March in Exeter.

But is it relevant to you? Sue feels the course would be useful for a particular type of business. “If we were operating as a face-to-face retailer with a shop front, it might be something that we would consider,” she says. “But we are a mail order company and our customers love receiving their catalogue. Not everyone wants to sit in front of a screen, especially if they are not computer literate.” Despite this, the website is a key selling tool. Sue continues: “People like to have a catalogue to make their decisions, but they often go online to place their order.”

To find out more and to book your place on the course visit http://www.blpeninsula.co.uk/dcevents/evnt_mktg, or telephone 0845 600 9966.

Businesses outside this area should look out for free courses at other regional offices. Click through from businesslink.gov.uk or call 0845 600 9966 to find events near you.
