The Craft Council and Hand Knitting Association launched the initiative Craft Club in 2010, to help provide young people with the opportunity to learn craft skills from members of their community through free after-school clubs. 2010 saw over 140 volunteers, including parents and other enthusiastic crafters, attend specialist training sessions, to learn how to pass on their crafty skills to others. Now the project has attracted over 1,700 volunteers worldwide.
With the plan for more clubs to take off already in the pipeline, it highlights an encouraging boast for the industry as more adults choose to share their passion for craft, planting that creative seed amongst children. Not to mention it gives young people the chance to broaden their knowledge and learn a new skill, rather than sitting in front of a computer at home.
TV personality and Craft Clubs Craft Champion Linda Barker is an ambassador for Craft Club and says, “I can remember my mum teaching my siblings and I craft skills as a child and I immediately fell in love with making. It is a great gift to pass on skills that remain with you for life. I am so pleased that Craft Club is reaching so many children across the UK.”
As well as being a fun, inclusive and sociable society, the clubs have a positive impact on the schools' overall educational reputation; the first ever Craft Club at a primary school in Sutton Coldfield received an outstanding report from Ofsted in 2010 with the project that the Craft Club worked on.
Now after their first successful year of activity The Craft Council Craft Clubs continues to grow from strength to strength, and has just announced the launch of its second scheme, Hook 1 Pass it On. The new programme will teach young people how to crochet and plans to run alongside Knit 1 Pass it On.
