Grannies For Hire!

While the knitting phenomenon continues to boom, a group of grannies from Wales have set up a brand new business concept to encourage more people to opt for something hand-made.
Grannies Inc, was set up by Katie Mowatt, and sees a group of over 70-year-olds come together to knit bespoke items for orders that have been placed by the public.
The grannies use soft and luxurious 100% British spun merino wool to bring customers' designs to life and Katies mother Ceri, is one of the avid knitters who wants to spread her love of knitting.
““My own grandmother taught me to knit, just squares to start with – I remember, it was just after the war,” she said.
“As I got into my teens and then into adulthood, I knitted a little bit for myself because I was quite a good knitter.”
The business is unique, as if people don't have the time to knit or don't know how, then the group can save them from missing out on owning something beautifully hand-made and personal.
“The customer designs the colour-way and Katie sends me the wool and e-mails me the pattern,” said Ceri.
“I make whatever they want – sometimes I make a bobble on the top – and then send it back to Katie fairly speedily.
“I think the idea is brilliant. The other grannies have generally said that they don’t do it for the money."
Ceri also believes that Grannies Inc has the edge over other hand-knitting companies, as it has that nostalgic appeal.
Popular orders include children's beanie hats and adult wrist warmers. With more and more knitting clubs popping up all over the country, why not persuade one to take it to the next level with your help?
