A petition aiming to get the 2012 Olympic Games to back the British wool industry has received an unprecedented response, seeing more than 11,000 people express their support for the campaign.
Targeted at encouraging the organisers of the Games to use British wool wherever possible during the Olympics, the scheme is one of a number of incentives launched over the past year to raise awareness about the importance of using locally-sourced materials.
Supporters of the petition recently gathered outside York Minster – the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe – to show their commitment to the cause, unveiling a specially-commissioned Union Jack flag made entirely from Yorkshire wool as a symbol of their campaign.
Commenting on the importance of the project, Hans Pörksen, livestock board chairman at The National Farmers' Union, says, “Our sheep flocks are declining and this is worrying, not only for farmers and the thousands of people employed in the wool textile industry, but there is also growing concern about the impact this will have on our ability to manage the unique rural landscapes so vital for our tourist industry.”
