The response to a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting crafts worldwide has exceeded expectations, seeing nearly 6,000 people sign up to show their support.
The initiative, Craft Matters, which was launched by the Crafts Council in October 2009 as part of its ongoing commitment to raising the profile of crafting around the globe, encourages people to demonstrate their support for the industry by signing up and telling the world why they believe craft is important to them
The scheme has attracted a great deal of attention since its launch last year, with some of the sector's most well loved and highly regarded figures signing up to show their support, including everyone from designers, collectors and writers, to retailers, manufacturers and everyday crafters.
The organisation celebrated its huge success with a prestigious event at the House of Lords earlier this month, boasting appearances from some of the most high profile names in the industry, including Linda Barker, Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone and Terence Conran.
Speaking at the event, Rosy Greenlees, executive director at the Crafts Council, highlighted the importance of supporting the campaign, saying, “Craft is part of the here and now, and and if we – and the people who have taken part and continue to sign up to Craft Matters – have their way, it will be a significant part of the future too.”
