One of the country's largest retailers will strengthen its position in the home décor market this year with the launch of its second, new-format, 'at Home' retail store.
Following the success of its first home-based store in Poole last October, John Lewis has announced it will be opening a second outlet in Croydon this Autumn, further emphasising the growing interest in home decor-related products over the last 12 months.
The store, which will be approximately a third of the size of a typical John Lewis department store and cover just 52,000 square feet of space, will boast a range of home-improvement products, including a small haberdashery section for those hoping to create, personalise and customise their own home furnishings.
The company has revealed it will be investing a further £7.5 million into its 'at Home' format – something which suggests interest in this area is expected to stay strong for some time. The launch of the new outlet is expected to create 220 new jobs in the area and generate lucrative custom for smaller businesses in and around Croydon.
Commenting on the launch, Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis, says, “Our shop in Poole has performed above expectations since day one, and given us the confidence to open in Croydon, extend our reach and attract new customers.
“We’ve identified 30 to 50 locations which would be suitable for the John Lewis at Home format stores, and a decision to roll these out will be taken in March. In the meantime, we’re delighted to be able to bring another John Lewis at Home shop to fruition this year,” he adds.

Hoping for more than a ‘small’ haberdashery section! JL haby is great and has a wide appeal, so it’s good opportunity for them to attract the existing and future handmade community.
