Knitters from all over Coventry joined together last night, in a mass knitathon and raised an impressive £5,000 for Comic Relief. Almost seven-hundred people, young and old, took to their needles and yarn and spent the evening at Coventry Cathedral in an attempt to break a world record.
The aim was to gather together over 937 people to sit down and knit simultaneously for 15 minutes, which unfortunately they just missed out on, but despite not breaking that record they still managed to gain a place in the record books, for their 20-minute knitting stint altogether.
With a £5 entry fee all being donated to Comic Relief, the knitters were all in good spirits, including great granny Joyce Roberts, who at 101 years old, was the oldest knitter to join in the festivities. People worked on a variety of projects including scarves, hats and cakes during the event, and some found themselves knitting amongst councillors, BBC journalists and even Miss Coventry.
