Retailers across the country have seen demand for their knitting supplies rise rapidly over the past, with some businesses seeing their profits rise by as much as 100% during the last two years alone.
Heightened awareness of the pastime in the media, continual endorsement from celebrities and the general interest in handmade goods right now have all contributed to the growing interest in knitting, seeing individuals of all ages and income brackets pick up their balls of yarn and needles.
Commenting on the growing interest in knitting over the past few months, Wayne McEwan, who runs yarn business Alternative Polperro with his wife Tracey in Cornwall, says, “Our internet sales have been very strong over the last couple of weeks – something I assume has a lot to do with the coverage it has received in the media lately, with both the BBC and ITV doing stories on it this year.”
Explaining that the business has only been trading for 24 months, he adds, “We have experienced a significant growth in our sales every year since we opened and are currently 200% up on 2009, which is amazing! Knitting really appears to be making a comeback and although it has been popular for quite some time, 2010 seemed to be a lot more about dressmaking and sewing. However, that's all changing and I think 2011 is going to be a really good year for wool shops. ”
And Mr McEwan isn't the only retailer to have experienced a rise in his sales. “Business has been booming for us over the past few weeks and I'd say we're busier now than we've been for a very long time,” reveals Joyce Mason of Spin A Yarn in Devon, who recently saw her knitting workshops completely booked up within two days of posting their details.
“We've been running the business for just over four years now and have seen our turnover rise by around 30% since last year, she continues, revealing that the store now has approximately 3,000 customers regularly purchasing their supplies from it. “Consumers definitely haven't downgraded their purchases; if anything, they're going for the more expensive purchases and buying more from us than ever!”
