A cutting-edge knitting designer from Britain has been crowned this year's winner in the British Fashion Council's (BFC) prestigious Fashion Forward initiative, beating competition from some of the industry's hottest up and coming talents.
Louise Goldin – who is currently one of the biggest names in the knitting world and credited for pioneering a new and exciting era in knitwear – will receive sponsorship for two seasons and be invited to show her work at both the February and September London Fashion Weeks taking place this year. Her unique creations and innovative SS10 collection – which combine her own hand-knitted fabrics and textures with structured and sculpted garments defying traditional knitwear – are set to cast the knitting industry into the spotlight yet again, making it the second consecutive year the time-honoured craft has dominated the catwalks at the show.
Miss Goldin beat off stiff competition from some of the biggest rising stars of the past few years, including Emilio de la Morena and Jean-Pierre Braganza Osman.
Commenting on the highly-regarded accolade, Miss Goldin enthuses, “I am so proud to be a winner of this prestigious award. It is amazing to have support from The British Fashion Council, Coutts and industry experts. I am even more driven to create my most successful collection yet! Receiving the financial sponsorship enables me to create pieces which are commercially viable yet maintain creative integrity.”
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, was keen to highlight the value of the scheme, saying, “All around the world, people love London's cool and funky designers, who, like Louise Goldin, bring skill as well as innovative flair. This terrific scheme gives them an international platform and the business know-how to help them convert their ideas into profit and even bigger success.”
Harold Tillman, chairman of the BFC agrees, adding, “London’s reputation for creativity is largely fuelled by its innovative fashion designers, of which Louise is a great example. We are incredibly proud of the talent and potential here in the capital, which is being watched closely by the world’s media and buyers.”
