Liberty Increases Haberdashery Range by 100%

One of the country's leading retailers has revealed it will be doubling the size of its fabric department this year, suggesting the market for haberdashery is stronger than ever.
Renowned for its unique selection of fabrics and materials, Liberty has been a big name in the haberdashery sector since it first opened its doors in 1875 and continues to attract customers from all over the world.
Demand for the company's fabrics and Sewing School has risen substantially over the past 12 months, leading to the store doubling the size of its range.
Highlights of the newly-expanded department will include materials from some of the most iconic brands in the world, including prints from Tana Lawns; wools, silks and cottons by Varuna and the full range of Liberty fabrics in four colourways.
The long-awaited collection of printed fabrics from legendary shoe designer Manolo Blahnik will also be available for the first time, as will a number of other top-quality crafting materials – trimmings, buttons, sewing boxes, and tapestry, cushion and needlepoint kits.
Kits for children will also be a strong feature of the range, with projects for creating fabric mice and felt jewellery just two of the sets to be launched this year. The store will also be reintroducing its hugely popular ready-to-sew skirt kits and hosting a number of new classes over the autumn and winter, including lessons in patchwork, sewing and millinery.
Speaking to Craft Business, Liberty's haberdashery buyer, Julie Hassan, reveals why the company decided to increase the size of its collection. “We had a great response to our new ranges and felt that if we expanded we could introduce more categories. Over the past year we have seen really strong sales in both the haberdashery and fabric area, and will be focusing on these in 2011. We will also be offering diverse courses in our stitch classes to build on the success we have already seen.”
Commenting on how the market is doing as a whole, Ms Hassan adds, “I think it is very buoyant at the moment and people are much more willing to try and either update an existing item of clothing, or create something of their own.”
