Retired pop-star Lily Allen has proudly declared her new-found contentment as a housewife and mother-to-be, and is more likely to be found sewing a new project than strutting across the stage.
At just 26 and after only a four year pop career where she penned a string of hits, Lily has embraced tradition after marrying builder Sam Cooper in June this year and now devotes herself to an idyllic life in the Cotswolds.
With hobbies such as baking, knitting and embroidery fast becoming her new favourite pastimes, she is preparing for her new arrival by creating a range of home-made items with her new Janome JP720 sewing machine.
A world away from her days touring the globe as part of her rock and roll lifestyle, Lily is embarking on her first project; making a cot valance for her baby due in just a few months.
Speaking to the London Evening Standard’s ES magazine, she said: “I’ve chosen the fabric from Michael S. Smith’s Jasper range, a Dutch stripe in porcelain. It’s going to look amazing.
“I’m going to start on it this evening, after I’ve made dinner for my husband. Confit duck legs from Jesse Smith’s in Tetbury, and they have been marinating overnight. Leftover Victoria sponge for dessert.
“I tend to make at least one cake a weekend, and if we have workmen in the house, as we often do, I’ll bake something for them to have with their afternoon tea, either biscuits or a cake.”
With motherhood approaching, Lily is happy to live a domestic life and has taken her husbands name in another traditional step.
The singer added: “I’m happiest in the kitchen, leafing through an interior design book, sticking recipes in my scrapbook, cosying up to the Aga, stroking the dogs, fielding phone calls from tradesmen.
“Believe it or not, I’m 26. And I used to be a pop star. I know. Weird right?
“The thing is, this is the life I always wanted. I always wanted to get married, I always wanted to have kids. I have always wanted to set up a home.
“It’s not promoting drudgery…It’s about saying being at home, looking after your family, taking pleasure in cooking and being house proud, are all valid and valuable.”
With Lily Allen being the next celebrity scarlet to take a shine to embroidery, her fans are bound to be inspired with what she is doing and try their hand at a bit of sewing for themselves.
