One of the world's best-known actresses has recently revealed she is a huge fan of sewing and loves nothing more than repairing her old garments and stitching her husband's socks.
Dame Helen Mirren – star of The Queen, Gosford Park and Calendar Girls – spoke to the Daily Express about her passion for the pastime earlier this month, saying, “I love darning. I darn my husband's socks. I love it when he says, 'I have a hole in my sock' or 'I have a rip in my trousers. Can you mend it?'"
Despite a number of well-known actresses – Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston, to name just a few – expressing their passion for various crafts, mainly knitting, over the past few years, this is thought to be one of the first times such a high-profile name has spoken publicly about sewing, helping to raise its profile higher.
“Celebrities definitely have a huge influence over industry trends and all it takes is for someone in the public eye – Cath Kidston or Kirstie Allsopp, for instance – to talk about a particular craft in one of their books or on a TV programme for sales of anything relating to it to rise,” says Becky Noble, who owns Millie Moon Haberdashery Shop in Somerset. “Although I can't say I've had anyone mention Helen's interview to me so far, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they do and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the effect her comments have.”
Speculating about how the sewing market is doing at the moment, she enthuses, “We've had a fantastic start to the year so far; Christmas was fantastic and January's been really busy. Our workshops are especially popular right now and we're having to offer many of the classes that we only used to do once or twice a year on a monthly basis now, which is brilliant. Everyone seems to want to sew these days and we're feeling very optimistic about the next 12 months.”
