According to new research released today by online and television retailer QVC, craft in the UK is continuing to make waves as 86 percent of Britons say that taking up a creative hobby would help bolster their mental wellbeing.
79 percent of Brits said crafting distracts them from everyday worries about money, work and relationships. A further 89 percent said that they felt a sense of self satisfaction in creating something unique themselves.
With the summer waving goodbye for the year, it's good news for retailers as the survey showed winter to be the craftiest time of year, with 52 percent of Brits being likely to take part in a craft activity.
The report also highlighted Wales as the craftiest region, with 77 percent of people there taking up a creative hobby. Meanwhile at the lower end of the spectrum, just over half of those in Northern Ireland have ever taken part in a craft activity.
The report revealed that 76 percent of Londoners feel their craft hobbies help them cope with everyday life in a more resourceful way while 72 per cent of those in Yorkshire and Humber believe it makes them more thoughtful.
The male/female divide was surprising close, with 79 percent of women stating they are regular crafters and 63 percent of men saying the same. It seems that you need to give male customers a thought when displaying your wares and not only target the core female market.
Unsurprisingly, card making is the most popular hobby with female Brits and a firm favourite with crafters aged 25 and under with 46 percent enjoying it the most. Whereas men on the other hand would prefer to paint (49 percent) or model make (43 percent).
The QVC research also showed that the over 45s prefer the relaxation of stitching to other creative arts such as card-making or beading.
Mary-Ann Pickering, QVC's Craft Buyer comments: "We've seen a big increase in craft customers over the last decade as more and more people realize how pleasurable it can be.
“Crafting is not only calming but it also gives you the pleasure and satisfaction of making something from scratch.”
With an encouraging amount of people reaping the benefits of crafting and many more considering it as a regular hobby, there has never been a more crucial time to up your game and earn some more business.
