One of the craft industry’s largest online forums has been named 'community site of the year' in the 2010 .net Awards, beating competition from some of the best-known sites in the world, including Twitter and Facebook.
Currently boasting more than a million members worldwide, Ravelry is one of the most talked about craft forums in the industry and continues to attract people from all over the globe. Covering everything from knitting and crochet, to spinning, weaving and dying, it has become increasingly popular over the past few years and generated a great deal of media attention since its launch.
Started by web design and development magazine .net, the awards are now in their 13th year and were formed to celebrate the very best in web-based media.
Commenting on their growing significance, Dan Oliver, editor-in-chief of .net, says, “We believe our combination of public nominations and industry voting is the fairest and most transparent in web design and development, and that's backed up by the phenomenal year-on-year growth we've seen.
“This year we clocked 95,399 votes, which was a 56% increase on the previous year's figures,” he adds. “The .net Awards have become the benchmark for anyone serious about web design and this year's results reflect the continued growth and innovation of our industry. Roll on 2011!”
Sarah Neal, editor of Let's Knit, agrees interest in the internet within the craft industry remains strong, saying, “Sites like Ravelry tap into the desire many knitters have to create their own community and enables them to form relationships with like-minded individuals who share their passions.
“Over the past few years, there has definitely been a huge rise in the number of people using the web to showcase their latest projects and communicate with one another, and awards such as these highlight just how important the internet has become to crafters in today's world,” she adds.
