Shocking pinks, turquoises and dragonflies; wedding crafts are veering away from the traditional this year
For the big day everything needs to be perfect. So it's not surprising that brides and grooms are taking matters into their own hands and crafting their way into matrimonial bliss by making homemade invites and table decorations. Carol Richardson from wedding website Confetti reveals that newlyweds are becoming more and more daring in their creations. “People are more adventurous than ever in their colour choices,” explains Carol. “While traditional ivory and burgundy are still popular, many people want to be individual and different and are being much more creative using unusual combinations and more than one colour in their scheme.
“We are definitely seeing a trend towards new colour combinations,” continues Carol, whose website offers information, inspiration and products as well as having a presence on the high street with five shops across the country. “Chocolate brown is very popular, and is being used with turquoise and shocking pink.” Carol adds that the theme of romance is more prevalent than ever in wedding crafts for 2008. “This reflects what we have seen for bridal fashion, which is seeing a huge swing towards romantic detailing with ruffles, lace, bows, volume and swathes all huge trends for the new year. Detailing is key and as people are becoming more confident in their creativity, we are seeing them use a greater selection of products, adding several accessories to a piece for example. Feathers and butterflies are still popular themes, but fairies and dragonflies are also in demand - it is a very pretty, soft season with lots of romance.” Technology is also having an effect, points out Caroline. “The advent of professional standard home printers means that people can produce items at high standards at home, printing to a set template and adding personal details such as jewels, ribbons, bows, lace and cutwork.” Yet traditional methods remain popular and are being given a modern twist: “Quilling is becoming bigger and people are looking for special papers and unusual colours. Metallics continues to be an important trend with lots of gold, silver and bronze,” adds Carol.
