Jewellery designer, Claire Aristides, give some insight into jewellery trends
Increasing numbers of crafters are turning their hand to jewellery making to express their creativity and to add a touch of glitz to their projects. “Jewellery making has certainly increased in popularity, there has been a rise in the number of bead shops and online retailers selling beads and supplies. Its popularity is not a surprise because it's such a wonderful skill, which can be enjoyed by anyone who loves jewellery,” Claire explains. Inspiration is given to the consumer in a variety of different ways with the desire to create a stylish finished product being the main objective. “The creativity of designing is a huge draw, it is relaxing and rewarding,” she explains. “In our classes we find everyone enjoys being creative. There are also many people who make jewellery more regularly and do it so they can create a fantastic collection of different pieces, or to give to friends and family as gifts.”

Catwalk fashions and items that appear on the high street are the first place to watch when looking for upcoming trends. “Magazines and celebrities all influence trends, big earrings and long pendant necklaces are worn by stars and so they are popular designs for many jewellery designers and hobbyists,” says Claire. “Currently we are seeing lots of large hoop earrings and tassels of gems and chains. Charm bracelets are really big too!”
In terms of colourways, these again are linked with what is happening in the world of fashion, with a palette that complements the shades on the high street. “People are using lots of purples and greens in their designs and there is always room for classic black,” adds Claire. Focusing on techniques that are proving popular, Claire has noted a strong interest in wiring beads to different types of chain. Keeping the selection of jewellery making materials in line with the current trends on the high street will help to maintain interest and inspire consumers.
