Retailer Julie Benham gives us the lowdown on one of this year's top releases
The Read
Although I can't say I am a very big fan of knitted dolls, I did find this book interesting and think it takes quite a modern approach to the pastime. While many of the techniques used appear rather simple at first glance, some of the more complex touches, such as the embellishments, would be better suited to a more experienced crafter with an artistic flair, rather than a beginner.
The title is likely to appeal to quite a young demographic and while I am sure some older customers would be interested in its contents, I think it would generally be bought for much younger shoppers, or those with an existing interest in dolls.
Having said that, I did show it to some children in the shop and although some absolutely loved it, we did have quite a few of them say they found the dolls rather scary!
The Look
First impressions are everything when it comes to books and this title certainly looks like it will be an interesting read, and makes you want to flick through. Fortunately, it doesn't disappoint and keeps you turning the pages all the way through. Featuring new and unique projects on every page, it is beautifully illustrated and full of inspirational ideas for those with an interest in doll making.
The book is also beautifully presented with an eye-catching cover that is likely to peak people's interest. What's more, it's not flimsy or poorly put together, but a pleasant-looking title your customers will be able to keep for life, or purchase as a gift for their friends and families.
The Sell
While I don't think the book would appeal to those with an interest in traditional doll making, as the designs are so unusual and out there, I do think it would attract people who are looking for something slightly different to the norm.
The £9.99 price point also seems quite fair and although the book might not be my cup of tea, I do think there would be a strong market for it.
