With the wedding season fast approaching, we investigate the latest trends taking the hat world by storm
As ever, hats have been a huge talking point this year, seeing some of the best known stars in the world grace magazine covers all over the globe wearing a selection of the finest. And, with the arrival of the eagerly-anticipated Sex and the City Two movie – and subsequent media coverage of what its stars are wearing – just around the corner, it is highly likely that interest in millinery is set to explode over the next month. But what are this year's key looks?
“At the moment, 40s and 50s inspired headwear is very much in favour, with pieces featuring any form of veiling, or components that cover people's eyes, also becoming increasingly popular,” reveals designer, Linda Bratley, of handmade hat producer, The Lovely Hat Company. “With the current fashion for maxi dresses continuing to gain momentum, we are seeing a growing number of people gravitate towards much smaller designs, similar to those worn by Jackie O back in the day.
“When it comes to colours, anything and everything seems to be vogue, with royal and navy blues and citrus colours becoming particularly fashionable,” she continues. “Hues inspired by tropical countries such as the Caribbean are also very much in demand, as is anything bright or eye-catching.”
Revealing that large, brimmed hats are no longer in favour, she adds, “Nowadays, it's all about 'hatinators'. Larger versions of fascinators, they are especially popular with younger customers and are expected to be huge over the next year.”
She continues, “People also seem to be moving towards some of the less structured pieces we have in-store, and looking for headwear made from materials that can create a feeling of movement. We have also noticed a rise in the number of younger customers expressing an interest in our designs, and have also had a lot of individuals asking us if we offer classes so they can learn to make their own.”
Commenting on the impact the upcoming Sex and the City movie is likely to have on the demand for these goods, Linda adds, “We are expecting a significant boost in our sales over the next few months, with Moroccan-inspired pieces becoming very popular due to the setting of the film. Last year, it was all about fascinators, so it will be interesting to see what fashions Sarah Jessica Parker and the girls inspire next.”
