Quirky, eye-catching and full of pizazz, hats are leading the way, but what are the latest trends and how can you get in on the action?
It's official: hats are back in vogue and looking bigger and bolder than ever before. Gone are the days when less meant more; now it's all about funky, attention-grabbing pieces guaranteed to make people stop and stare. Anything traditional, safe or ordinary will be yesterday's news, with loud, proud and awe-inspiring headwear set to take its place. But what are the latest trends you should be looking out for?
“There has definitely been a rise in the number of younger people wearing hats,” explains Angela Coupe from bespoke millinery designer hatsonheads.com. “And this has inevitably had an impact on trends within the sector. At the moment, consumers are generally gravitating towards pieces offering something slightly different from the norm, so anything with the wow factor will be very much in favour.”
The past year has seen a rise in the number of people choosing to make their own headwear, with more discerning consumers rejecting store-bought, mass-produced millinery in favour of funkier designs they've created themselves. This has seen hat making kits grow increasingly popular and suggests this trend is likely to stay strong for some time.
“I think it's very important for businesses to encourage consumers to experiment with their own creations,” adds Angela's business partner Carol Robinson. “Our designer DIY sets are doing extremely well at the moment and come in different styles and colours. We also include a designer hat box for storage, step by step instructions and all the materials necessary for consumers to create their very own pieces. I think this is a very exciting trend to emerge and the longer we keep people interested, the better it will be for everyone.”
