Papercellar’s Deepa Mehta talks about the current paper trends sure to get attention
“Paper is still one of the biggest things and in the last year especially, pattern papers have done extremely well, as have papers with glitter and embossing on them. I think the reason is that they’re very easy to use and crafters can just get a patterned piece of paper, put it on a card and create such a professional look.
In terms of colours, I think it depends on what type of card maker your customer is and there are two schools of thought at the moment – first you have the classic crafters, where for spring it will be very natural tones, but then all the funky retro colours like bright fuchsias and greens are going to make a big come back next year as well.
Lots of craft trends follow what's happening in fashion and yellow and purple are big colours at the moment, so papers are going to follow on from that. Also, during the last couple of months, pearlescent card is becoming far more popular and it could be because of the broad range of tools currently available for embossing and so forth. Papers that are already die cut for scrapbooking, in addition to self-adhesive papers, are set to be very popular as well, making it easy for crafters.
Paper is definitely the bread and butter of crafts, and you can have so many different varieties. In our pick and pack, for instance, we have several hundred varieties and they all sell equally as well as each other because every single type of crafter is looking for something different and exclusive, as they want their card to look unique.
My advice to retailers would be to merchandise well so that everything is easy to access in store, and they should be able to show all the different things you can do with paper because while the good crafter will know, the beginner might not realise the possibilities. As long as there’s a good paper stock, crafters will always be able to make something fabulous!”
