One of crafting's biggest companies tells us what to watch out for.
1. Make do and mend!
It's only set to get bigger and better! A result of the economic downturn of recent years, the revival of the ‘make do and mend’ attitude has seen more people crafting than ever before. This trend looks set to continue as the fashion for all things bespoke, vintage and handmade is constantly growing. It is a great time for products that introduce these new crafters to different techniques in an easy and accessible way. At Sizzix, we’ve created the Big Shot Starter Kit to show both novice and expert crafters that die cutting is really simple and there’s so much you can do with it.
2. A Vintage Revival
This year, the royal wedding made us all nostalgic, with everything typically British being championed across crafts and fashion. The love of bunting, cupcakes and Union Jacks may have subsided of late, but the vintage trend looks set to evolve and grow throughout the rest of 2011. This fashion sees a move towards rough, steampunk-style designs mixed with lighter accents such as fabrics, doilies and pearls. The latest range of dies from Tim Holtz’s Alterations line is perfect for this rough vintage style, especially when embellished with the more ladylike features such as lace and ribbon.
3. Floral Fancy
It is no surprise that florals will be a big trend for the summer and beyond. Flowers are a perennial favourite amongst crafters, but this year there is a real range to choose from. Chintzy patterns are everywhere at the moment, mixed with more graphic style flower prints that echo the current fashion for all things 70s in style. As the season progresses expect to see more of this trend, but with the blooms taking on brighter colours to match the natural vibrancy of summer.
4. Jewellery
Jewellery crafting has grown in popularity this year, with media such as fabric and shrink plastic appearing alongside the traditional beads and metal findings, making this hobby accessible to a much broader range of crafters. We’ve even got jewellery fever at Sizzix, and are launching our own range of jewellery dies in August this year. With so many different materials and styles emerging, this trend is sure to continue well into 2012 and beyond.
5. A crafty lifestyle
Revamping your home and clothes has become a modern preoccupation, with people taking it beyond the occasional hobby towards a complete style of living. The growth of the lifestyle-based craft magazine is only further testament to this emerging trend, particularly in the home décor department. Less about creation and more about reclamation, this trend is all about taking existing items and adding a crafty touch to make them truly unique.
One of the most exciting trends in the craft market over the last few years has been the growth in the appeal of crafting to a wider audience.
