With businesses all over the country claiming cross stitch is making a comeback this year, we caught up with Jamie Chalmers – of the popular website, mrxstitch.com – to get the latest on some of the more radical trends taking the market by storm
Launched in 2008, mrxstitch.com is fast becoming one of the most talked about sites in the craft world, seeing consumers all over the world log on to get a dose of its daily offering. Currently considered one of the best needlecraft and embroidery websites in the world, it showcases a range of new and exciting designs that really push the boundaries of stitching and crafting. Favouring anything out of the ordinary, the site is an invaluable source of information for anyone looking to tap into the cross stitch market this year, and provides a fantastic insight into the types of projects customers are crafting.
Commenting on the growing interest in this area over the past few years, founder Jamie Chalmers, reveals, “The era of cross stitch being about country cottages and kittens playing with balls of wool is coming to an end; these days, it’s all about taking the latest catchphrase or sarcastic remark, and stitching it up using colourful fonts and borders to create something fresh.” A trend he reveals is commonly referred to as 'snarky stitching'.
Analysing the reason for the rising interest in this trend, he adds, “The internet is empowering amateur stitchers to connect with one another via sites like Craftster and Flickr, and new ideas and inspiration are appearing everyday. Thanks to sites like 'Subversive Cross Stitch' and 'Sublime Stitching', people all over the globe are finding their voices through stitching, and using the medium in a myriad of ways to express their world views. And, in doing so, are coming to understand the pleasures of crafting and developing their own artistry.
“At MrXStitch, we’re constantly discovering new 'snarky stitchers', who bring us terrific humour and wit with their fantastic work,” he adds. “Pop culture references are continually being recreated and reformed by people, and shortly after a new phenomenon spreads across the internet, you can guarantee someone will stitch something snarky about it – and it will be great.”
