As people reject mass produced goodies in favour of home-baked treats, Beverley Dutton, director of Squires Kitchen Sugarcraft, tells us why sugarcrafts are the next big thing.
The recent economic climate has affected consumer behaviour more than ever before. As people have become increasingly aware of where they spend their pennies, many have returned to making their own clothes, accessories and favourite treats by hand. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that sugarcrafts are making a major comeback this year. “There has definitely been a return to home baking as well as an increased interest in food decoration in general,” Beverley explains. “This could be due to the recent focus on eating fresh, home-cooked food. The fact that sugarcraft is a relatively inexpensive hobby which can be enjoyed by all ages at any time has also been a significant factor.”
The confectionary sector is continually evolving and, like in all industries, trends tend to come and go at a relatively rapid pace. “Cupcakes and individual miniature cakes are currently very popular,” Beverley says. “There has also been a growing interest in cupcake bling, which includes items such as edible sugar diamonds and other decorations. Chocolate wedding cakes and decorations such as chocolate roses are also favourites.”
So what emerging trends can we expect to see over the next year or so? “Afternoon tea favourites such as fondant fancies and battenberg cake are definitely experiencing a comeback. Additionally, sugar diamonds, miniature creations and gift cakes are still going strong. There are also some fabulous new chocolate decorations that will soon be available, they are likely to be quite popular and are certainly something to look out for.”
