A lack of technological knowledge is putting small businesses off starting their own online shops, a new report has revealed.
Forty-nine percent of those retailers quizzed in the survey, carried out by Amenworld.com, voiced fears that they don't have enough expertise to set up an e-shop. Other worries included not being able to find the right software, the time associated with establishing and maintaining an online store as well as the added costs involved. Only 11% saw no obstacles in the way of setting up an internet shop.
Jill Kirtley, manager of the Card Crafting Company in County Durham, says a lack of funds prevents her from expanding her bricks and mortar shop onto the internet. “It's partly money; things have been quite tight recently and so money needs to go into back into the shop and into the stock. The other thing is I'm very much a technophobe!” she adds.
Amenworld.com aims to make it simple for businesses to get started on the web. “The internet is the only place where small businesses can compete with global organisations,” says Andrew Fassnidge, Amenworld’s UK marketing manager. “The value of internet sales is set to double in the next five years, but too many businesses are put off selling online by the perceived complexity and expense of online shops.”
